提供善用分句法加強英文翻譯技巧

分句法：有時英文長句中主詞或主要的句型與修飾詞的關係並不是很密切, 英文翻譯時可按中文常用的文法的慣，大多會把冗長句型精減，分開來描述,為了使語意融會貫通，需適當增加語句。例如：  
  
1. The number of the young people in the United States who can`t read is incredible about one in four.   
從述的英文句子中看起來是相當簡單且容易瞭解，但是如果我們按原文的句型結構死板的翻譯，就極有可能英文翻譯成：「沒有什麼閱讀能力的美國青少年的數目令人難以相信約為1/4」。這樣，就使得譯文極為不通順，較無法表達出中文的語譯習慣，因此應該把整個句型英文翻譯成：「大約有1/4的美國青少年沒有什麼閱讀能力，這簡直令人難以置信」。  
 
2. Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events, allow one to follow the latest developments in science and politics, and offers an endless series of programmes which are both instructive and entertaining.  

分析: 在整個句子中，有一個插入語“it is often said”，三個並列的謂語結構, 還有一個定語從句, 這三個並列的謂語結構儘管在結構上同屬同一個句型，但卻各自有其不同的意義，因此翻譯時，可採用分句法，按照中文的翻譯習慣把整個句子分解成幾個獨立的句型，英文翻譯的內容為：人們常說, 透過電視可以瞭解時事, 掌握科技和政治的最新動態。從電視還可以看到層出不窮的端倪、既有文教意義且有娛樂性的新節目。  
 
3. All they have to do is press a button, and they can see plays, films, operas, and shows of every kind, not to mention political discussions and the latest exciting football match.  

他們所必須做的只是按一下開關。開關一打開，就可以看到電視劇、電影、歌劇，以及其他各式各樣的文藝節目。至於政治議題的辯論、最期令人激動的足球賽事更是不在之下。  
 
4. Although perhaps only 1 per cent of the life that has started somewhere will develop into highly complex and intelligent patterns, so vast is the number of planets that intelligent life is bound to be a natural part of the universe.  

某處雖然在已經開始的生命中可能僅有百分之一機會發展成高度複雜、有智慧的型式, 但是行星的數目如此繁多，以致於有智慧的生命必定是宇宙的一個天然組成部分。
